Dutch Universities belong to the world’s best universities. The Times Education Supplement reported October 5 a list of the top 100 universities in the world in the British newspaper “The Times”. Among the Dutch universities, the TU Eindhoven scores the best, ranked 67, just above the University of Amsterdam (UvA) at 69. The TU Delft ranks 86. Furthermore the number of Dutch universities increased noticably with Leiden (90), Utrecht (95) and Wageningen (97) entering the charts.

Women have been in the news lately. At the TU/e a special event on women in science, to involve more women in technical sciences. In sports, the Netherlands celebrated the birth of a female professional soccer team in Twente. Furthermore there is a majority of women involved in online gaming (CNET)!
However, this hit me.

A study on 5000 computer users, asking questions about virusses, spyware and e-mail shows that:

• Male computer users called in more than 50% of the cases about problems that could be solved in less than 10 minutes, while
• Female computer users called in nearly 75% of the cases about problems that were more complicated and could not be solved in less than 10 minutes.

The next time a female computer user asks me something about their computer, I’ll try the more psychological approach: How would you solve it yourself?
